We are excited to announce the launch of the public consultation for the 2025 update to the Puro.earth Biochar Methodology. This update aims to enhance the integrity of biochar-based carbon dioxide removal (CDR) by incorporating recent scientific advancements and insights gained from five years of certifying biochar projects.
Key Updates in the Proposed 2025 Methodology:
IncreasedDurability: Transition from CORC100+ to CORC200+, representingbiochar carbon removal over several centuries.
Alignment with Standards: Full integration with Puro.earth General Rules 4.1 and ICVCM CCP.
Refinements and Clarifications: Incorporation of learnings regarding biomass sourcing, biochar production, and end-use applications to ensure robust and sustainable practices.
This consultation also includes updates to the Biomass Sourcing Criteria and a Transition Plan detailing how the adoption of the updated methodology will be managed. The core principles established in 2019 remain unchanged but have been expanded to support global scaling of biochar activities.
